Letter to the Author I wrote
November 28, 2012
Dear Wladyslaw Szpilman,
From what I have read it sounds tough in Warsaw at the moment. I heard the Germans invaded and that everything has gone chaotic. I hope you stay safe from the Germans. Have you been keeping up on your piano playing? I have heard you play at the café and you have played on the radio. Congratulation That takes a lot of courage to do that.
I have a question that I have been thinking about for some time. Why didn’t you and your family run away when you heard that the Germans were coming to Poland? It was all over the radio and no one wanted to leave. Now since everyone decided to stay you all are miserable. I’ve heard that the Germans have been beating random people and raiding peoples houses. Is that true? I think you should start hiding your money and valuables. I’ve also heard that the Germans have been examining people and killing them if they are too old. If they are young they have to go to camps. I even heard that one guy that the Germans were examining was really old so they threw him off the second floor of his house with out mercy.
I don’t understand why the U.S. or Great Britain hasn’t gotten involved yet. Germany is taking over all these countries and no one is stopping them. Some one should do something. They are turning every place they go to into a ghetto or concentration camp. I think you should start thinking about running away. Try and go at night when the German guards are tired. Also make sure you get home before curfew after your piano playing at the café . We wouldn’t want a repeat of when you got caught the last time after curfew. I didn’t think that German officer was going to let you go. I thought he would have killed you right there. Just imagine if you weren’t a musician he would have killed you. He only let you go because he was a musician too and kind of felt sorry for you. You have got to be more careful.
I remember when I heard that the Germans were rounding up people for live game hunting. The Germans would make the jewish people run down the streets of Warsaw while they shot at them. Sometimes the Germans would ride in a truck and chase the jews while shooting them. This was their sick way of having fun. Every once in a while there would be a guy who dodges the bullets and makes it away, but the Germans always find them. After the Germans were done chasing and killing the jews they would run over the dead bodies with their trucks. The streets were filled with rotting dead corpses every day. How do you live with all the corpses? Every day you walk pass them on your way to the café, but you act as if they do not really bother you. You are a very strong person.
Sincerely, Andrew Rose
